Mrs. Lois Caputo has been named as the new children’s ministries director for the Cathedral of Christ the King, Sharpsburg. The new director will have responsibility for the current children’s church program, for Vacation Bible Schools, and for a future planned children’s Sunday school program and an expanded children’s church ministry. She will also be responsible for teacher recruitment and oversight and for the development and implementation of a solid curriculum for the children’s programs.
“Lois has some great concepts and brings with her a wealth of ministry experience,” said Bishop David Epps, rector of Christ the King. “We both agree that children should experience both learning and fun!”
Caputo always has had a desire to serve in church ministry. As a young mother (four sons), she became involved as a volunteer in the children’s Christian education program at her local church. She taught various groups of elementary age children for more than ten years. When her youngest child entered kindergarten, she began working for a Christian retreat ministry, At Home Retreats, continuing until its close early in 1990.
Also in 1990, a new position for her husband, Don, in the Cleveland area of Ohio meant a move for the family who then had three college age sons and one high school student. In Ohio, Caputo was hired by St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, Bay Village, where she worked as pastoral associate/director of children’s and women’s ministry. At St. Barnabas her studies in Old and New Testament and human relations received at St. Joseph College, Patchogue, N.Y, were expanded upon. A two-year scripture study, Bethel Bible Series, and additional leadership training equipped her for teaching. Workshops, seminars, reading and mentoring honed skills in children’s ministry.
“It was more than a career for me, Caputo says. “It was a time of being led by God and of finding fulfillment in serving.”
Caputo worked at St. Barnabas for 13 years. Then another career move for her husband brought the now empty nesters to Easton, Pa.
Again, seeking to serve in the church, Caputo took on a leadership role in developing a team for children’s ministry at Arndt’s Lutheran Church. This too was rewarding, she says, though short lived.
After two years, the Caputos moved to Senoia in October, 2005. They began attending Christ the King in January, 2006, and remain committed members. Caputo has been teaching the 3-5 year old children at the church for about three years.
Caputo says she is delighted to have an opportunity to increase her service in the Church’s ministry to children, adding, “Teaching children that they are loved by God, their Father, saved by Jesus Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit to live for Christ is a privilege and a joy. It only can be done through dependence on God.”
