Peachtree City wine aficionados get ready: the Kroger grocery company is preparing to offer wine tasting events, which won a sanction from the City Council Thursday night.
The ordinance forbids wine tasting at stores selling package liquor, and it seemingly eliminates wine tasting events at convenience stores by requiring an area “that is separated from the retail area of the premises by walls or other partitions that prohibit pedestrian traffic through the wine tasting area.”
The city also will require a special yearly permit fee of $150 for establishments wishing to conduct wine tastings on premises.
The ordinance does not allow wine tastings at restaurants or bars, which have a license to sell alcohol by the drink.
The motion to adopt the wine tasting regulations won unanimous support from council.
Peachtree City retailers who sell package beer and wine may soon have the option of hosting wine tasting events.
An ordinance has been drafted by city staff that would allow wine tastings at establishments that already offer package beer and wine sales. Last month, a representative of the Kroger grocery company asked for the ordinance, saying that Kroger has had success in building wine sales through tasting events.
The City Council is expected to vote on the ordinance at its first meeting Thursday night
