An Atlanta man and former Fayetteville resident has been charged with sexual battery after he fondled an elderly woman who considered him to be a family friend.

Tony Cooper, 54, was charged with sexual battery in an incident that occurred Dec. 16, according to Fayetteville Police spokesman Steve Crawshaw.

Crawshaw said Cooper arrived at the home of an 89-year-old woman to pick up some of her son’s clothes that she was donating to him.

Cooper is a former resident of the neighborhood and had brought fruits and vegetables to the woman on past occasions, Crawshaw said, adding that the woman thinks of Cooper as a son.

When Cooper arrived, he followed the woman into the house. He then came up behind her, reached around and began fondling her breasts, Crawshaw said. Cooper stopped when the woman began to cry and told him to leave her alone, said Crawshaw.

Crawshaw said that Cooper then left the home. He was located later and subsequently interviewed and arrested by Fayetteville officers.
