Margo Merrifield has been a member of Newnan Coweta Art Association since her recent move to Coweta County in 2006. Her love of art began in second grade with her mother’s figure drawing lessons, while at the same time, learning the Palmer method of cursive writing. Margo’s first college major was art education, however life, and several more years of college major changes, took her in a different direction.
Early retirement, coupled with a move to a county rich in abundant resources for budding artists, has brought art back into her life. In between golf, dog walking and bike riding, art has become Margo’s retirement hobby — maybe even career. She has even combined hobbies, delaying her next golf shot while trying to catch that perfect photo of autumn colors or interesting cast of light on the green (probably to the dismay of her fellow golfers!).
Margo has received considerable encouragement and inspiration from classes and demonstrations available through the NEWCAA. The online art community also provides helpful tips and new techniques. Margo’s love of photography has added even more creative stimulus providing an unlimited source of landscapes, lighting nuances, and people for added creative inspiration.
In the past year, Margo has had success as an architectural portrait artist, rendering local historical buildings and homes in graphite, pen and ink and mixed media. Personal homes have been very popular, and Margo has completed drawings based on photos provided by clients or taken by herself
Oil and pastel art mediums are a new direction for Margo, and she is enjoying this new challenge. Creations in all three mediums are on display this month in the Newnan Library.
Newnan Coweta Art Association meets the third Thursday of each month (from September to May) at the Harriet Alexander Art Center on Hospital Road at 7 p.m. Visitors and guests are welcome. An art demonstration is presented each month.
