Debbie Britt, president and CEO of Fayette Senior Services, has been elected to the Meals On Wheels Association of America (MOWAA) Board of Directors.
Britt’s leadership role comes at a critical time. Six million seniors – one in nine – face the threat of hunger in America, according to research (www.mowaa.org/research) sponsored by MOWAA. The MOWAA Board governs the national organization which is committed to ending senior hunger in America by the year 2020.
Britt also serves at the state level as President-elect Meals On Wheels Association of Georgia.
Georgia ranks #6 on MOWAA’s “Top Ten Senior Hunger States” list, based on the same research. The list ranks the states (highest to lowest) based on the percentage of seniors in each state who are at risk of hunger. The research also revealed that 23.1 percent of Georgia’s seniors live alone putting them at greater risk for hunger and lack of proper nutrition.
“Fayette County is home to the third fastest growing senior population in metro Atlanta. Each year we deliver more than 40,000 Meals On Wheels to hundreds of older adults in our community. It’s important to understand that senior hunger cuts across all socioeconomic lines. With the downturned economy and rising cost of living, seniors today face very real income challenges that make it hard to maintain a proper diet. Moreover, many simply have difficulty preparing a nutritious meal due chronic illnesses or other disabilities,” said Britt.
“I’m deeply honored to serve on the MOWAA Board of Directors and to be part of a network of national leadership that is committed to ensuring that no senior goes hungry or is without the important social contact and wellness check that comes with each Meals On Wheels delivery. I hope to leverage this opportunity to make an even greater contribution to improving the quality of life for Fayette’s seniors so they can remain living independently with dignity and respect,” Britt added.
“We are honored to have Debbie on our Board,” said Enid Borden, President and CEO of MOWAA. “Her leadership and commitment to this cause will only help us in our fight to end senior hunger by 2020. She is known for her passion and her advocacy and by working with her we will end senior hunger.
Britt was elected to the MOWAA Board of Directors this summer, and was sworn-in to begin her three-year term during MOWAA’s recent conference in Chicago.
