Fayette County third, fifth and eighth students maintained their statewide academic standing during the 2010-2011 school year by scoring high on the Criterion-Referenced Competency Test. Only a small number of school systems tallied higher scores.
School system spokesperson Melinda Berry-Dreisbach said Fayette’s scores showed improvement this year and were among the best in the state.
Berry-Dreisbach said a one-year improvement was shown on all test subjects in grades 3, 5 and 8 except for a .5 decrease in grade 3 Social Studies and a 1.4 decrease in grade 8 Science. The greatest gains were in the grade 5 tests with a one-year improvement of 2 percent in Reading, 2.4 percent in English/Language Arts, and 2.3 percent in Math. Grade 3 Math also increased 1.1 percent, Berry-Dreisbach said.
“Compared to other system scores released by the Georgia Department of Education, the county’s students posted high pass rate percentages for meeting or exceeding standards in all subject areas in critical grades 3, 5 and 8,” Berry-Dreisbach said. “Only Forsyth County and a few smaller systems posted higher pass rate percentages.”
State law requires that students in grades 3, 5 and 8 meet or exceed expectations on the CRCT in Reading in order to be promoted. Fifth and 8th grade students must also meet or exceed expectations on the CRCT in Mathematics.
