Terry Garlock was a Cobra helicopter gunship pilot in the Vietnam War. In December, 1969 he was shot down in a firefight. Garlock was disabled: trapped in the wreckage with a broken back and paralyzed legs. The enemy was nearby. Two fellow pilots, John Synowsky and Graham Stevens, risked their lives by landing to help Terry and his fellow crewmember, Ron Hefner.
Among his awards are the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and Distinguished Flying Cross.
After his daughters, Melanie and Kristen were born, Garlock began to wonder about the version of the war that they would read in their schoolbooks. It was then he resolved to do what he could to capture the truth of the war in his words and in the words of dozens of his fellow Vietnam Veterans. Garlock’s book, “Strength and Honor: America’s Best in Vietnam,” is the result of that resolution.
Garlock will be at the Peachtree City Library on Sunday, June 26, at 1 p.m. to sign copies of his books. Please come and show your support for this American hero and for the hundreds of other heroes whose stories have not yet been told.
