City Hall is calling on Peachtree City businesses to show their patriotic colors in the next several days.

The June 20 Update says, “Peachtree City Businesses – We need your help! Between June 25 and July 10, representatives from Randy McNally and USA Today will visit Peachtree City on the ‘Best of the Road’ Rally, judging our community against five others in the country for ‘Most Patriotic Town.’

“This is a great time to show the Red, White, and Blue in support of Independence Day. While Peachtree City’s ordinances limit signs and banners, the following are permitted as holiday decorations as long as there is no commercial message:

· American flags

· Bows/ribbons

· Bunting

Please make sure no decorations/flags block pedestrian, vehicular, or golf cart traffic or visibility, and do not place decorations or flags in the rights of way of Ga. highways 54 and 74.”

The call for patriotic displays comes as Peachtree City will be competing against five other towns in the United States for the title of “Most Patriotic Small Town” in the Best of the Road Competition sponsored by Rand McNally and USA TODAY.

To assist with the competition, city residents are being asked to decorate their golf carts, fly their flags and post their red, white and blue banners earlier this year in advance of the city’s annual July 4 celebration.

The contest involves a team of travelers that will be coming for a visit sometime after June 23.

The visiting team will be creating blog posts, videos and photos that will be used by “Best of the Road” judges to select the winning towns.

About Peachtree City, USA Today says, “Great schools, numerous lakes, tons of green space, excellent facilities for every sport, miles of golf cart paths, and the best Fourth of July celebration around.”

City organizers are hopeful they can build on that initial impression by having the visit coincide with the city’s annual July 4 parade and fireworks extravaganza.

If the visiting team isn’t able to make it for July 4, a special celebration will be organized to welcome them, said Nancy Price, head of the city’s Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Peachtree City’s other competitors in the “Most Patriotic” category include Clarksville, Tenn., Emporia, Kan., Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo., Rapid City, S.D. and Williamsburg, Va.

The teams’ three-week adventure can be followed via videos, photos and updates at bestoftheroad.com. At the end, each team will choose the No. 1 town in each of their respective categories (to be announced July 22). The towns will be highlighted on the Rand McNally website and in the 2013 Rand McNally Road Atlas, as well as on USA TODAY’s Travel site.

The winning team also takes home $10,000 in prize money.

The contest features five categories: most beautiful, most patriotic, friendliest, most fun and best for food, with six towns selected in each. One other Georgia community — Valdosta — is competing in the friendliest category.
