American Legion Post 50 of Peachtree City held their local oratorical contest Jan. 22 and their first place winner is Heidi Turner; second place winner is Jordan Schumacher. Turner will be advancing to The American Legion district contest to be held in Griffin Feb. 17.
High school students of Fayette and Coweta counties were invited by American Legion Post 50 to compete in their Annual American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program. Post Commander Arnie Geiger and Post Oratorical Contest Chairman James Causey invited local public high schools, private, parochial and home schools to participate.
The subject in the prepared oration portion of the contest was on some phase of the Constitution of the United States, emphasizing the duties and obligations of a citizen to the United States government. This prepared oration had to be the original effort of each contestant and be 8-10 minutes in length.
This contest is designed to help hone the students speaking & presentation skills but especially to help enhance their knowledge of the U.S. Constitution.
In addition to the scholarship awards by winners of the various elimination rounds of competition, college scholarships of $18,000, $16,000, and $14,000 will be awarded to the first through third places in the national finals.
The top three state youth orators who have won all previous elimination rounds of the contest will vie for top honors in the national contest on April 15-17, 2011, at the IUPUI Conference Center and Hotel, Indianapolis, Ind.
