A request for $1.8 million in county SPLOST funds for two big-budget transportation projects in Peachtree City will be discussed Wednesday by the Fayette County Commission.
The Peachtree City Council is asking for $1.03 million to build a “gateway” cart path bridge near the city and county limits on Ga. Highway 54.
The city is also asking for $774,000 to add additional lanes to the intersection of Peachtree Parkway and Crosstown Road, though the price could drop as the city hopes to get state approval to delete a proposed traffic light from the plan so it can remain a four-way stop.
While the city did receive a percentage of SPLOST funds for city projects, much of the money was used on maintenance for roads and cart paths, and there was not enough left over to tackle the bridge and intersection proposals.
The city is asking for the county to pay for the projects from funds collected as part of the “countywide” portion of the SPLOST.
Several City Council members are expected to attend the commission meeting to make their case for funding the projects.
The path bridge would link The Shoppes at the Village Piazza to the Wilksmoor Village, and it will be accessible via the Planterra Ridge subdivision by going through the Line Creek Nature Area.
The city already has land for the northern landing of the bridge, which is adjacent to a path tunnel underneath MacDuff Parkway that can be used to reach shops in the area.
If the county approves funding for the path bridge, it will take several years for the bridge to be built because the city will have to start the state’s plan development process that takes several years to get through, officials said.
While the intersection work at Peachtree Parkway and Crosstown Road will also require a DOT approval, the project is already approved as designed and the nod is necessary to remove the proposed stoplight.
If approved, that would allow new turn lanes to be built at the intersection to improve traffic flow.
