The Newnan-Coweta Historical Society (NCHS) will present this year’s annual Yuletide Tour of Homes on Friday, Dec. 3 in Newnan, the “City of Homes.” The tour is from 5 to 9 p.m. and includes seven homes that span over a century of architectural styles.
This popular event has been presented by the Piedmont Newnan Hospital Auxiliary for the past twenty-three years, and NCHS is honored to be this year’s sponsor.
The houses for this year’s tour were chosen for the diversity of their architectural styles and the significant collections of decorative arts that reflect the varied interests of their owners. Docents costumed in attire appropriate to the period of each home will greet guests.
The following homes will be featured on this year’s tour: the Glover-Trezevant home at 45 College Street, a Neoclassical Revival mansion completed in 1923; the Owens-Hudson-Jones home at 69 Jackson Street, designed in the 1930’s by noted Atlanta architect R. Kennon Perry in the English Tudor style; the Bowers-LaMance home at 50 Lundy Street, a post-World War II bungalow built in 1948; the Simms-Albright home at 66 LaGrange Street, a circa 1870’s Classical Revival mansion built by Civil War officer and state legislator Captain John Dickinson Simms; the Cook-Healy home at 84 LaGrange Street built in 1900, a transitional design linking the Victorian and emerging Craftsman styles; “Buena Vista” at 87 LaGrange Street, built in 1830 and served as headquarters for Confederate General Joe Wheeler during the Battle of Brown’s Mill in 1864; the Bryant-Christiansen home at 108 LaGrange Street, a Normandy style bungalow built in 1941.
Also included will be the Male Academy at 30 Temple Avenue, a former private school for boys from 1883 to 1889. It now houses a museum operated by the Newnan-Coweta Historical Society. It contains an extensive collection of Civil War artifacts, battle flags, medical items and weaponry.
Tour tickets are $12 through November 30, $15 through December 3. Tickets may be purchased at the following locations: Male Academy Museum (Visa/Mastercard accepted), Scott’s Bookstore (South Courthouse Square) and Coweta County Welcome Center (East Courthouse entrance).
