Preliminary indications are that Goodwill is proposing to open a retail and drop-off center in the Uptown Square shopping center on Ga. Highway 85 across from the Fayette Pavilion.
The location was the site of Linens-n-Things — now closed and in bankruptcy — a few storefronts from the Barnes & Noble bookstore that closed in May.
Few details are currently available for the proposal that will come before the Fayetteville Planning and Zoning Commission in December. The city’s planning staff is expecting to receive additional information on the proposal prior to the meeting Dec. 7.
Tentative plans for the store include revamping the interior of the 34,000-square-foot building and providing a drop-off area for donations in the rear of the building.
Issues expected to be addressed at the Dec. 7 meeting include a more detailed plan, samples of materials to be used, design detail and elevations and proposed signage.
Goodwill two years ago advanced the idea of constructing a retail store and training center in the Banks Station commercial area. Those plans never materialized.
The current proposal is one of the few larger projects that has come before the city’s planning commission since the recession took hold.
