The groundbreaking for the new Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) hospital in Newnan’s Ashley Park retail area was anticipated to occur in December. But hospital officials Wednesday said those plans are subject to the company’s ability to obtain the title on the property from Coweta County developer Stan Thomas.
CTCA public relations manager Kristin Schaner confirmed Thursday that the company will request a six-month extension on the initial construction. The request was said to be a precautionary measure.
CTCA director of new business development Pete Govorchin told Newnan officials Wednesday that problem is linked to financial issues between developer Stan Thomas and the lender, Schaner said.
“We’ve been unable to take possession,” said Govorchin. “Thomas Enterprises has faced some tough economic times, just like a lot of people have, and Thomas Enterprises is in a financial dispute with the lender. Since the situation is unresolved, it will affect our ability to close on the land.”
Schaner previously said that the hospital will have more than 200,000 square feet, adding that the all-digital Newnan facility will offer new a choice in cancer treatment.
As with its other facilities around the country, CTCA is expected to draw a large number of its patients from far beyond the traditional geographic areas served by traditional hospitals providing cancer treatment.
“With more than two-thirds of its patients expected to come from outside the state of Georgia, patients and their families will contribute to the growth and vitality of the local economy,” Schaner said. “CTCA expects the new facility to generate 500 news jobs and $500 million in economic activity over the first five years of operation.”
