Five of Georgia’s leading gubernatorial candidates have given their support for public charter schools, according to statements released Tuesday by the Georgia Charter Schools Association (GCSA).

The candidates that submitted completed questionnaires supplied by GCSA included Thurbert Baker (D), Nathan Deal (R), Karen Handel (R), Eric Johnson (R) and John Oxendine (R). Every candidate, in all parties, that officially qualified for the governor’s race was asked by the GCSA to complete the survey, which posed seven questions covering six topics:
·Parental Choice
·Public Charter Schools
·Equitable Funding
·Charter Facilities
·Quality Charter Authorizing
·Charter Autonomy

Though the level of their support for charter schools varied slightly, all five candidates said they either agreed or strongly agreed with public charter schools, the press release said.

“We are grateful to the candidates for taking time out of their busy schedules to complete our survey, and we greatly appreciate their feelings toward charter schools,” said Dr. Tony Roberts, Chief Executive Officer of the GCSA. “This is just another indication of the fact that charter schools are increasingly being viewed, and rightfully so, as one of the key components to improving public education in our nation.”
