Frankie Lyle Chapter #2074, United Daughters of the Confederacy observed Confederate Memorial Day with a Ceremony of Bestowal of Military Service Awards to veterans who served our country during World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam Conflict and the Dominican Republic Operation.
The ceremony was held on April 24, 2010 at the historic Philadelphia Presbyterian Church in Forest Park with a reception honoring the recipients and guests.
Honored were: Kenneth Wayne Fortner, U. S. Army of Fayetteville, who received the Vietnam Conflict Cross and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Service Medal for his service in the Dominican Republic Operation; Wayne Harris, U. S. Army of Fayetteville received the Vietnam Conflict Cross and also accepted the World War II Cross awarded posthumously to his father Albert Lester Harris, U. S. Army; Barnard W. Walker, U. S. Army received the Korean National Defense Medal; Mrs. Shirley Bailey of Rome accepted the Vietnam Conflict National Defense Medal awarded posthumously to her husband, William Charles Bailey, U. S. Air Force; In the second row are Bill Thrailkill who accepted the World War II Cross for his uncle Herbert E. Thrailkill , U. S. Navy of Atlanta; Eugene C. Martin, U. S. Army of Fayetteville received the World War II Cross; William Paul Lowry, U. S. Army of Grantville received the World War II Cross; President Linda Ramey; Linda Robinson, Recorder of Military Service Awards and Johnny Lee Kit Cross, U. S. Army of Jonesboro received the Vietnam Conflict Cross.
Mr. John Britton Wells III of Newnan was presented the Jefferson Davis Historical Gold Medal for authoring a book titled 10th Kentucky Cavalry, CSA: May’s – Trimble’s – Diamond’s “Yankee Chasers”.
President Linda Ramey introduced special guest, Mrs. Iris Lee Jordan, whose father, Lewis Gay, served as a Corporal, Hunt’s Co., 4th Florida Volunteer Infantry in the Confederate States Army. Historian Natalie Davis introduced Mr. Sparks Ramey, Jr. who spoke on “Why We Honor These Men”.
