For the first time in 10 years, a Fayette County school has won boys and girls soccer titles in the same classification.

Last Friday, Starr’s Mill’s boys defeated McIntosh 4-2 in penalty kicks and the following day Starr’s Mill’s girls beat Whitewater 2-1.

Both games featured number two seeds knocking off number one seeds and both games had the second ranked teams from Class AAAA upsetting the top ranked team.

Friday’s game at McIntosh was before an enormous crowd with close to 3,200 people taking in the game. Saturday’s crowd at Whitewater was smaller but no less enthusiastic.

While many will talk about this weekend’s games and the historic nature of the victories coming against local rivals on their home turf, especially with talk of a McIntosh goal called back in overtime, both McIntosh and Starr’s Mill have captured state titles in soccer in the same season before.

In fact, in 2000, both schools brought home the hardware in both boys and girls play (McIntosh in Class AAAA and Starr’s Mill in Class AAA).

The state titles this season marked the second for the Starr’s Mill boys and the fifth for the Starr’s Mill girls. The Lady Panthers have now won state championships in Class AAA, AAAA and AAAAA.
