It’s been a long time in coming, but Sunday at 2 p.m. Peachtree City officials will host a ribbon cutting for the new cart path bridge along Ga. Highway 54 West that spans the CSX railroad tracks.
Delayed more than three years from completion in large part to problems with approvals at the state level, the unique bridge and tunnel system is now open to path users. The structure links the McIntosh Village, Marketplace and Avenue shopping centers and also has access to Huddleston Road.
The ribbon cutting ceremony starts at 2 p.m. in the parking lot outside the Books-A-Million store at The Avenue.
The grand opening Sunday will also feature activities at surrounding shops. The city has been working with merchants in the area to offer specials and sidewalk sales to celebrate the bridge opening.
The bridge and tunnels have been in place for more than three years, as they were completed when the Department of Transportation widened Hwy. 54 West to four lanes. But the project got bogged down as a separate grant was used to pay for the construction of the spiraling approach paths that lead between the bridge and tunnels.
The project has taken so long that some current and former city officials have taken to calling it “the bridge to nowhere.”
