The Southern Museum of Civil War & Locomotive History announces its partnership with Kennesaw State University for the 2010 KSU Lecture Series.
“These are really engaging presentations that take Civil War history and look at it from different angles,” explained Mike Bearrow, senior curator of the Museum. “Both presenters are well-known professors and experts in their fields, and it’s a great honor to host them at the Southern Museum.”
Lectures began Feb. 23. The second event will be on March 2 at 7 PM, featuring Brian S. Wills. Wills is the author of “Gone with the Glory: The History of the Civil War in Cinema.” Attendees will explore the changing interpretations of the Civil War in American film, and how movies have reflected America’s changing attitude toward the conflict between the North and South. Wills is a professor of history at the University of Virginia at Wise in Wise, Virginia.
“This is a great opportunity for area residents to look at Civil War history in a different light,” Bearrow said. “Whether you’re a history buff or a novice, these events will help open your eyes to an integral piece of American history.”
These events are free of charge. Both lectures will take place on their respective dates from 7 PM to 9 PM at the Museum’s Jolley Education Center. A Smithsonian Institution affiliate, the Southern Museum features collections of rare Civil War weapons, uniforms and other personal items; an exciting exhibit about The Great Locomotive Chase, including a short movie; and a full-scale replica of a locomotive factory that helped rebuild the South after the war. The Southern Museum is located 20 miles north of Atlanta, off I-75 at exit 273. Admission is $7.50 for adults, $6.50 for seniors, $5.50 for children ages three through 12 and free for children two and under.
