Leaving a mark beyond this season

The Landmark varsity volleyball team finish the 2015 season with a trip to the state championship match, but the most season will be measured in an area far greater than wins and losses and one that few teams can match.

Led by junior Cameron Dobbs, the Landmark team embarked upon a mission to raise awareness of childhood cancer research and funding for Curing Kids Cancer, an Atlanta based nonprofit organization that funds cutting-edge research of childhood cancers in hopes of providing better treatments with less side effects. Cameron became familiar with Curing Kids Cancer when her older brother, Sam Dobbs, participated in the Rising Seniors football bowl game in 2014.

Sam and the bowl players had the opportunity to meet the founders of Curing Kids Cancer, hear their journey of the loss of their child to cancer, and to interact with children who had been diagnosed with this disease.

Sam befriended one of the youths and was moved to action.  He began to advocate for Curing Kids Cancer and his passion spread to Cameron.

Landmark volleyball coach Sheri Creamer, and the varsity team felt equally compelled to make a difference and Serve the Cure was established. For each ace served by the War Eagles on the home court games, each player donated $1. The four home games resulted in 150 aces.

Fans, parents, and students made additional contributions and in December the Landmark volleyball team presented a check to Curing Kids Cancer for $1551.

Members of the Landmark varsity volleyball team include Coach Sheri Creamer, Coach Russell Aguirre, and Coach Lisa Wettstein.  Captains are Betsy Burson, Cameron Dobbs, and Alleigh Wettstein.  Varsity members include Nola Richardson, Gabrielle Cerasoli, Camille Garden, Becca Grady, Katelin Umberhandt, and Anna Seppings.

An online giving page has been created to continue donations through the Serve the Cure initiative at www.curingkidscancer.org. To find out more about the Landmark volleyball team visit www.landmarkchristianschool.org.
