Boys basketball
McIntosh defeated Our Lady of Mercy 78-44 in a season-opening scrimmage last week. Sophomore Dishon Lowery led all scorers with 19 and chipped in 11 rebounds. Junior Phillip Venson scored 16, sophomore Jordan Lyons scored 9, sophomore Will Washington scored 8, and senior Connor Nash scored 7. “We shared the ball very well,” said McIntosh head coach Jason Eisele. “All eleven Chiefs who played scored in the contest.”
Sandy Creek won 73-70 over South Cobb Saturday. Jalen Lee led the team in scoring with 22 points. The Patriots face Hardaway this weekend. The Lady Patriots lost to Woodward 49-31 in a game at King’s Ridge Christian Academy.

Girls basketball
McIntosh hosted Our Lady of Mercy for an exhibition to kick off the season and won 65-33. The Lady Chiefs started slowly, shooting 15 percent in the first quarter, but shot 55 percent in the second half to pull away for the win. “This is a great group of girls and we are excited about the upcoming season,” said head coach Alex Mull.
Landmark fell to Northgate 53-38 Saturday, as Jillian Price scored 14 points and Joy Stucker added 13. The Lady War Eagles recorded a 49-39 win over Galloway Monday behind 14 points from Stucker, 12 by Abby Johns and six apiece from Price and Diamond Smith.
Whitewater lost 50-40 to Burke County in the Verizon Shoot for a Cure tournament at King’s Ridge. Jada Coggins had 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Danielle Ross added 10 points and 5 rebounds.

Wrestling
Fayette County competed in five matches over the weekend at the Kennesaw Mountain Duals, finishing 4-1 and in second place. Wins were against Kennesaw Mountain (52-27), Hardaway (60-21), Rockmart (57-15) and Chapel Hill. The Tigers’ only loss of day was to Roswell (48-27).
Whitewater finished fifth at the Spartan Slam, opening with a 44-22 loss to Oconee County before picking up wins against Mt. Vernon (50-25) and Fannin County (54-21). West Hall pulled out a 37-36 win over the Wildcats, who then took down White County 51-30 to secure fifth place. Going undefeated for the day were Zach Thorne (5 wins, 3 pins); Barrett Martin (2 wins, 1 pin); Reid Loveless; Gary Hogg (4 wins, 3 pins); Ashley Arrington (1 win); and Jason Higgins (4 wins, 2 pins). Alex Walker (4 pins) and Kaelan Hutson (1 pin) finished 4-1 for the event.
Starr’s Mill came through with commanding wins over Mt. Zion, Morrow and Dutchtown to start the season, according to coach Dennis Bogumill. The team finished 4-2 at a weekend tournament at Forest Park, beating Eagle’s Landing for third place. Several wrestlers earned their first high school victories, including Chase Reinert, who won his first-ever match by a score of 12-11. Returning starters Jake Schaper and Jonathan Parrish ended the weekend with winning records and “appear poised to step up this year as leaders and help the team to another strong season,” Bogumill said.

Swimming
McIntosh defeated Sandy Creek in a Saturday dual meet. Chipper Machemel, Maalik Nixon, Sam Butler and Ryan Salter recorded a state-qualifying time of 3:45.7 in the boys 400 relay. Top girls included Olivia Ulrich with a 6:37.04 in the 500 free, Alexandra Schmid with a 2:21.6 in the 200 IM and Samantha Schmid with a 2:10.0 in the 200 free. Coach Amanda Marino commended all of the swimmers for their hard work and effort.
Starr’s Mill won a weekend meet 372-183 against Whitewater. State qualifiers for the Panthers included Donna Blaum (women’s 100 fly, women’s 100 free); Johanna Goldblatt (women’s 50 free, women’s 100 back); John Michael Hall (men’s 50 free); Austin Palmer (men’s 500 free); and the women’s 200 medley relay, 200 free relay and 400 free relay teams.
