The West Georgia Chapter of the Georgia Power Ambassadors on Nov. 11 honored veterans at the organization’s meeting in Newnan. The guest speaker at the meeting was 101-year-old Tyrone resident Lamar Wallace, a veteran of World War II.
As veterans arrived for the meeting at Wesley Woods in Newnan, they were thanked for their service. There were almost 30 veterans in attendance. Each was introduced and their branch of service was announced, said organization spokesperson Theresa Kinzly.
Lamar Wallace, a Tyrone resident who will celebrate his 102nd birthday on Nov. 28, led the assembly in the Pledge of Allegiance.
During his comments later in the meeting, Wallace spoke about serving during World War II in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters.
Wallace in reflecting on his youth spoke about growing up in rural Oklahoma. He noted the time he tried to outrun a dust storm that was traveling about 50 miles per hour in a car driven by his father, who would not drive faster than 45 miles per hour.
Kinzly said the meeting’s attendees agreed that it was an honor to recognize veterans who had served their country, adding that Wallace’s presentation was interesting and informative.
Membership in the West Georgia Chapter of the Georgia Power Ambassadors is open to Southern Company retirees and their spouses or widows. West Georgia Chapter members live in various counties such as Coweta, Carroll, Fayette, Douglas, Haralson, Troup, and Heard.
Kinzly said organization member continued the tradition of being “A citizen wherever we serve” by volunteering their service in many local activities.
