The McIntosh Chiefs varsity boys basketball team completed a perfect regular season with Friday night’s 71-37 win over Northgate, and the next step for them as well as other boys and girls teams in the county is this week’s region tournaments.

The Chiefs earned a bye in the first round of the Region 4-AAAAA tournament, which will be played at Drew High School, so their next appearance on the court will be Thursday against the winner of Tuesday’s game between Ola and Forest Park. The 13-team region field required a play-in game Saturday, in which Starr’s Mill won 63-46 over Northgate to earn a matchup last night against Woodland. The winner of that game plays Thursday against Drew.

Other first-round games Tuesday are Morrow vs. Dutchtown (winner plays Stockbridge) and Mundy’s Mill vs. Union Grove (winner plays Luella). Should McIntosh win Thursday, its semifinal opponent Friday would be the winner of the Luella game. The championship and third-place games are Saturday, with the top two seeds from the tournament moving on to state. The Region 4-AAAAA girls also play at Drew this week, and got underway Monday night with Starr’s Mill beating Stockbridge 53-33 and McIntosh beating Ola 48-28. Other Monday matchups included Union Grove vs. Mundy’s Mill (winner plays Woodland) and Dutchtown vs. Morrow (winner plays Drew).

The quarterfinal games are Wednesday and the semifinals are Friday. Should the Lady Panthers and Lady Chiefs win two games each, they would meet in the semifinal round. The championship and third-place games are Saturday.

Fayette County will host the first round of the 5-AAAA girls tournament, with the Lady Tigers facing Sandy Creek Tuesday night after the Woodward-Troup County game. The next round is Thursday’s semifinals at Carrollton, with Whitewater playing the Fayette County-Sandy Creek winner and Carrollton playing the Woodward/Troup winner. Carrollton will host the championship game Saturday.

The boys begin play Wednesday at Woodward, with Fayette County vs. Whitewater (winner plays Carrollton) and Woodward vs. Troup County (winner plays Sandy Creek). The semifinals are Friday and the championship game Saturday, all at Carrollton.
