High school athletics are more than just a game. They are an opportunity to learn valuable life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and respect. That’s what makes Sandy Creek High’s athletes all winners and why Georgia’s electric cooperatives, including Coweta Fayette EMC (CFEMC), presented them the 2023-2024 Georgia High School Association Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Award.
The award recognizes high schools that demonstrate exemplary sportsmanship and ethical conduct in all sports throughout the school year. It is presented annually by EMC representatives to GHSA-member high schools in 64 regions and eight total classifications.
“Sportsmanship is not only about how you play the game but also how you treat others,” said Tiffany Trueblood, Public Relations and Communications Manager with CFEMC. “We are honored to bestow this award to Sandy Creek High School, its student-athletes, administrators, coaches, and fans who demonstrate the values of respect, fairness, and responsibility on and off the field. Sandy Creek, and the others being recognized, are setting a positive example for their communities and the future of our state.”
GHSA Executive Director Dr. Robin Hines put the recognition into perspective.
“This award reflects the values and principles that we want to instill in our young people as they prepare for adulthood,” he said. “We appreciate Georgia’s EMCs for their partnership and commitment to promoting good sportsmanship in high school athletics.”
Sandy Creek High has shown outstanding sportsmanship across all sports and among various groups involved in athletic events. The award was presented to the school and Principal Tosha Oliver before the varsity basketball game on December 10, and is a testament to the school’s dedication to excellence and integrity in high school sports.
Georgia’s EMCs have been presenting the Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Award since 2006 to emphasize, encourage, and reward positive behavior in athletics because ethical dealing is a hallmark of electric cooperatives.
