Positive Athlete Georgia has announced that four athletes from Fayette County Public Schools have been selected as winners of the 2016 South Atlanta Positive High School Athlete Award.

The winners are Antonio Trapp, football, Sandy Creek High; J.P. Scott, boy’s lacrosse, McIntosh High; Julie Lim, girl’s lacrosse, McIntosh High; and Elena Wernecke, girl’s tennis, Starr’s Mill High.

Positive Athlete Georgia defines a positive athlete as having the following seven character traits: optimistic attitude, encourages team- mates, servant leadership, heart for others, admits imperfections, always gives 100 percent, and puts the team first.

Any one, not just coaches, can nominate an athlete from any high school boys and girls sport. Parents, family, teammates, classmates or friends can fill out a nomination form if they think their choice meets the seven criteria for a Positive Athlete. The Positive Athlete Georgia selection team reviews the nominations and talks to coaches before naming a Positive Athlete for a particular sport.

Fayette’s winners joined others from Clayton and Henry counties at an awards ceremony April 28 at New Hope Baptist Church starting.

Positive Athlete Georgia is a movement by high-character professional athletes tied to Georgia professional and collegiate sports teams to promote the benefits of “positivity” to young athletes. These athletes believe it is crucial to begin shaping the futures of young athletes for life skills beyond athletic competition, and to learn how to give back to their community.

Current and former professional athletes are members of this organization, and high school athletes are invited to join based on being nominated by a coach, school administrator, parent or fan for the annual Georgia Positive High School Athlete Award.
