Fayette County School System officials say mold and humidity issues at Huddleston Elementary School in Peachtree City are within acceptable levels, but a question about Starr’s Mill High School has officials saying mold in the top of the gym that poses no air quality problems will be removed next summer.

Facilities Director Mike Satterfield at the Oct. 5 meeting of the Fayette County Board of Education provided a timeline for work completed at Huddleston to remediate mold and humidity. All interior spaces had test results within acceptable levels, he said.

Responding to community concerns last week about the presence of mold at Starr’s Mill High, Satterfield on Monday he did not recall any reports of mold in the classrooms this summer other than Huddleston Elementary.

The gym at Starr’s Mill was another story, Satterfield said.

“We have had some mold in the top of the gym at SMHS due to condensation that will be removed next summer when we begin renovating the building,” said Satterfield. “In order to remove the mold and paint the ceiling, we must install scaffolding from the floor to the ceiling which typically takes up most of a summer. We have had the gym tested recently and there are no air quality issues.”

Satterfield said it is not unusual to have a few calls each summer but typically they are small areas that are easily cleaned up by the custodial staff and Facilities Services.

“Sometimes we will have some minor mold issues related to re-roofing a building,” he said. “In the past, we have had some mold form on carpets when the custodial staff did not completely extract the water out of the carpets during the cleaning process.”
