Work on the east side of Ga. Highway 85 North across from Hood Avenue and adjacent to Hudson Plaza is full-steam ahead with crews extending Hood Avenue and preparing to install a roundabout to link three streets to North Jeff Davis Drive.

Ga. Department of Transportation crews recently installed the new traffic signals which will be utilized once the large traffic realignment is completed.

The east side of the realignment work will have Hood Avenue extended just south of Hudson Plaza to a roundabout that will link to Kathi Avenue and the extension of Church Street from where it currently ends at Georgia Avenue. Converging at the roundabout, the roadway will extend on to North Jeff Davis Drive a short distance to the east.

The entire Hwy. 92/Hood Avenue realignment project comes with numerous smaller projects and with an official completion date of spring 2017. Given that the projects are ahead of schedule, and with issues such as utility relocation and weather considered, the entire project could be completed by the end of 2016, said Fayetteville Public Services Director Chris Hindman.

Across Hwy. 85 to the west, it was on June 8 that Hood Avenue was closed at Hwy. 85 and the large roundabout was partially opened to traffic using Hood and Hwy. 92.

Hindman said the new traffic signal at Hood Avenue and Hwy. 85 could become operational and Hood Avenue opened once the ongoing work on the west side of Hwy. 85 is complete. Weather and other variables considered, the new signals could be turned on in September or October.

At that time, the current traffic signals a block to the north will be removed.

Until that time, traffic from Hwy. 92 and Hood Avenue will continue to use the traffic signal at the intersection of highways 85 and 92.
