The Dec. 6 discovery by Fayetteville patrol officers of a burglary in progress at the Shell Food Mart on North Glynn Street resulted in a chase and the apprehension of two people.

Fayetteville Police Department spokesman Mike Whitlow said officers patrolling the area of North Jeff Davis Drive and North Glynn Street just after 5 a.m. on Dec. 6 discovered a burglary in progress.

“An officer heard glass breaking in the area of the Shell Food Mart,” said Whitlow. “The officer proceeded to the Shell Food Mart to investigate and observed a white Lincoln Continental sitting in front of the store. As the officer pulled into the store parking lot, the vehicle fled northbound on North Glynn Street. The initial officer remained at the Shell station to investigate, confirming that a rock had been thrown through the front door, while another officer attempted to catch-up to the vehicle.”

Whitlow said a pursuit was initiated by Fayette County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Fayetteville Police units as the vehicle continued north on Ga. Highway 85 North and into Clayton County, reaching speeds of over 100 miles per hour.

The pursuit was joined by Clayton County Police Department officers. The vehicle continued north on Hwy. 85 and turned right onto Ga. Highway 138 then right onto Taylor Road. The vehicle pulled into a neighborhood off Taylor Road and the pursuing vehicles briefly lost contact, said Whitlow.

Whitlow said Clayton units located the vehicle and observed the occupants, a black male and black female, throwing lottery tickets into a wood line.

The female, Kinetra Mitchell, 37, of Petersburg, Va., was apprehended by Clayton County officers and the male fled on foot, Whitlow said, adding that Mitchell is charged with burglary.

Andre Gilbert, 49, of Atlanta, was subsequently apprehended by a Clayton County Police K-9 unit and was taken into custody. Gilbert is charged with burglary, numerous traffic offenses and obstruction relating to his striking the Clayton County police K-9 during his apprehension, said Whitlow.

Gilbert suffered minor injuries from the Police K-9 and was transported to Piedmont-Fayette Hospital where he is under guard.
