With a severe winter blood shortage, this month the American Red Cross issued an emergency call for blood donations.

“Blood and platelet donations are critically needed in the coming days so that patients can continue to receive the lifesaving treatments they are counting on,” said Alyson Barraza of the Connecticut Red Cross Blood Services Region. “We encourage donors to invite a family member or friend to donate with them to help meet patient needs. Right now, blood and platelet donations are being distributed to hospitals faster than they are coming in.”

Eligible blood donors are urged to schedule a donation today in conjunction with the Jan. 30 blood drive set for 1-6 p.m. at the Senoia United Methodist Church. Please note, too, that “walk-ins” are always welcome at these drives. The blood drive is co-sponsored by the local church and the Senoia Optimist Club.

The upcoming blood drive is for the Senoia area and beyond, and it will be held in the Fellowship Hall of the Senoia United Methodist Church. The church is in the historic district of Senoia and is located at 229 Bridge Street. It is at the intersection of Seavy and Bridge Streets. For those not familiar with the area, you can turn east at the downtown intersection of Main Street and Seavy Street, and go past the Veranda Bed & Breakfast toward the City Park or Hwy. 85. The church is on the right, only about two blocks east of Main Street.

Members of the Senoia Optimist Club will offer blood donors their “famous” grilled cheese sandwiches along with a number of free coupons from local area businesses.

Donors at the Senoia blood drive are again asked to bring one or more non-perishable food items. The Optimist Club members will collect these items and make them available to a local food bank in order to help those around us who are in need.

While “walk-ins” are welcome, potential donors may either sign up at

www.redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). In addition, Senoia Optimist Club member and blood drive coordinator Ellen Ingram may be contacted at 770-842-4533.

There is a serious need for all blood types. You are encouraged to please schedule an appointment to donate blood or platelets today.

The blood drive is held at the Senoia United Methodist Church on a quarterly basis. The next scheduled event is May 1.
