The agenda for the May 21 meeting of the Peachtree City Council should be less intense compared to others in recent months, but it will include an update on the state fireworks law and a request to hire supplemental services for the planning department.

Public Services Director John Rorie in a May 14 letter noted that the planning department continues to be short-staffed and is expected to fill the Planning and Development Director position in the near future. It was stated at a recent meeting that the position has been vacant for approximately one year.

Due to the current workload and being short-staffed, Rorie is requesting approve the planning services of LSL Planning (Safebuilt) at a cost of $27,000. The approval would provide an additional planner two days per week with an option for three days and not to exceed 18 hours per week.

Rorie said the planning department is currently engaged with 21 active retail, office and industrial development projects, five active residential development projects and ongoing requests pertaining to issues such as zoning interpretations, signage and variance requests.

The council meeting will also include discussion about recent changes in state law pertaining to fireworks displays.

A number of the other items on the agenda deal with public hearings on issues pertaining to building setback requests.
