The Fayetteville City Council took the first step Thursday night to allowing a new animal hospital in town. The hospital would be at the corner of Jimmy Mayfield Drive and Bradley Drive. The property is currently zoned Office and Institutional and houses a former daycare facility. Staff recommended it being rezoned to C-3-Highway Commercial with the conditions the building be no more than 10,000 sq. ft., no animals are allowed outside unless on a leash and no outdoor dog runs, pens or play areas.

Planning consultant Jahnee Prince said the applicant agreed to the the conditions and the first read passed by a unanimous vote. The second read is Dec.19.

In other action, the city approved an intergovernmental agreement with Fayette County to call for a Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax in March.

City Manager Ray Gibson said the six-year tax would net Fayetteville approximately $21 million over the duration of the tax.

Fayetteville has designated several areas for the tax proceeds, including:

• $9.5 million for wastewater and stormwater projects, including an upgrade to the wastewater treatment plant.

• $7 million for transportation projects.

• $5.1 million for public safety projects, including a new fire station.

• $3.4 million for parks and recreation. Gibson said this money would be used for area such as The Ridge Nature Area and also could be used in acquiring property for the city’s downtown master plan.

The projects total $25 million, and Gibson said the city could have to pare the projects back or seek additional funding sources to get them all completed.
