Holly Grove AME Church expanded and dedicated its church historical wing Aug. 28 in honor of member Annie Ruth Domineck Hammond, a 94-year-old retired public school teacher who lives in Griffin.
Even though she has served on numerous church boards, she was recognized for her dedication and support of the preservation of the Holly Grove AME Church history.
The Historical Committee, led by Dr. Alvetta Thomas, recognized Ms. Hammond’s commitment to the magnitude of the role Holly Grove has played in the history of Peachtree City and Fayette County. Ms. Hammond has been the church’s historian for many years, documenting and sharing the church’s role within the church and the community.
Holly Grove was established in 1897 near the banks of Camp Creek in western Fayette County and it has existed longer than Peachtree City by more than 60 years. Holly Grove initially served the community as a church and a school for many years.
During a brief ceremony, the wing was named in honor of Annie Ruth Domineck Hammond. Peachtree City Mayor Vanessa Fleisch attended the worship service and presented the Peachtree City proclamation to Ms. Hammond. Ms. Hammond tearfully thanked the historical committee for the renovations and the mayor for the recognition.
Holly Grove looks forward to continuing to serve the community with its annual yard sale, fish fry and programs. The church invites the community, students and general public to visit the historical room and the gravesite of the 1812 soldier, Duery May, to observe a past worth preserving.
Holly Grove AME Church is located at 400 Holly Grove Road in Peachtree City. Bishop Reginald T. Jackson is presiding prelate; Rev. Henry Oliver is pastor.
