Common Core math books pass Fayette BoE’s test 4-1

New math textbooks to be used in the Fayette County School System were approved by a 4-1 vote Monday by the Fayette County Board of Education. The motion also came with a provision that will examine how Fayette students can compete globally and will lead to an opinion that assesses both traditional and integrated math offerings.

The lone dissenting vote in the 4-1 approval came from board member Mary Kay Bacallao, who said her opposition dealt only with the textbook adoption portion of the motion. Read More»

Deputies nab 3 felons with pistols, stun gun, hand ties

Three previously-convicted felons were arrested early June 6 after deputies found two semi-automatic pistols, a stun gun, zip ties and other items in their car, according to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department.

Fayette County Sheriff Barry Babb believes the trio may have been on their way to commit a crime.

“Proactive police work probably interrupted their next move,” said Sheriff Barry Babb. “We’re currently sharing information with surrounding agencies to see if these suspects are being sought in any unsolved robberies.”

F’ville gets ready for the movie cameras, prepares to annex 1,200 county acres

It has been a while coming and the time for what is one of the larger annexations in Fayetteville’s history will come before the Fayetteville City Council Thursday night.

A total of 15 parcels representing nearly 1,200 acres on the city’s northwest side with multiple land owners involved will make the annexation requests. While most are requesting large lot residential zoning, there will be three property owners with 459 acres requesting PCD (Planned Community District) zoning. Chase Bank to raze, replace Kedron KFC

The former Kentucky Fried Chicken building in the Kedron Village shopping center may soon cluck its way into oblivion.

Chase Bank has submitted a proposal to demolish the empty former KFC at the corner of Peachtree Parkway and Georgian Park in favor of a 3,421 square-foot bank with 30 parking spaces.

Chase also wants to remove a significant amount of landscaping that would be replaced and maintained, a company representative told the Peachtree City Planning Commission Monday night. Read More»

Yamaha to expand ATV production, add 100 jobs

The new line of Yamaha all-terrain vehicles will be produced at the company’s Newnan plant. The introduction of the new product line will mean the initial hire of approximately 100 employees. Read More»

Local man sentenced on federal drug conviction

A Newnan man who was part of a group of 13 people convicted in 2011 of conspiring to possess and distribute oxycodone was sentenced on June 10 to three years probation for his role in the crime.

Terry Randy Wallace, 24, was sentenced in federal court on June 10 to three years probation. Wallace on May 11, 2011, entered a guilty plea to charges of conspiring to possess oxycodone with intent to distribute. Wallace was one of 13 people from around metro Atlanta receiving sentences ranging from time served in prison and probation up to 14 years in prison. Read More»

2 days, 3 drug busts: Fayette deputies seize crack, meth and pot

The Fayette County Sheriff’s drug team made arrests last week in three incidents where crack cocaine, methampethamine and marijuana were seized.

Sheriff Barry Babb said the Tactical Narcotics Team on June 5 conducted a buy-bust operation at 1846 Ga. Highway 85 North where Lisa Diaz, 49, and Gregory Lowe, 52, both of Atlanta, sold 14 baggies of crack cocaine to an undercover TNT agent. Both were arrested and charged with the sale of crack cocaine, possession of cocaine and three counts of possession of a dangerous drug, Babb said. Read More»
