The Coweta County Schol System is reminding the parents of next year’s Pre-K children that they should mark March 12-23 on their 2012 calendar. That is because there will be a limited number of Pre-K seats available for the 2012-2013 school year that begins next summer. The Pre-K application process begins in March and the need for a lottery is likely.

School system spokesman Dean Jackson said parents who wish to secure a spot for their child in the 2012-13 school system’s Pre-Kindergarten classes will be able to do so at their child’s district school between Monday, March 12 and Friday, March 23, 2012.

“During that time, parents can apply for a spot in the limited-space Pre-K classes for the 2012-13 school year. The Pre-K application process ends at noon on Friday, March 23, and the drawing for spots will be held at schools at 1 p.m. on March 23,” Jackson said. “Unlike other elementary school grades, there are a limited number of Pre-K classes in Coweta schools. If more than 22 students apply for an available Pre-K class, the school must hold a lottery drawing to determine placement in the class. The first 22 students drawn will be awarded a spot in that school’s Pre-K class. The remaining names will be placed in order of draw on a waiting list for that school in case spots in the class open later.”

Children must be four years old on or before Sept. 1, 2012 to be eligible for next year’s Pre-Kindergarten. Parents can call call 770-254-2820 to inquire about which elementary school district serves their home.

Jackson said parents can complete a Coweta County Pre-K application form for each child and place it in the lottery box at their district school. No enrollment documentation is required to apply for the Pre-K lottery March 12-23. Parents do not need to be present for the drawing on March 23.

Pre-K students in the, Ruth Hill, Elm Street, Atkinson, and Jefferson Parkway districts will apply for slots at Jefferson Parkway Elementary School, since those schools’ Pre-K classes are located at Jefferson Parkway. All other students should apply at their district school.

Elementary schools will accept Pre-K applications for eligible students March 12-23 from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., except on March 23 when applications will only be accepted through noon.

Jackson said that after the March 23 lottery drawing, parents will be able to formally register their child for 2012-2013 Pre-Kindergarten at the Central Registration Office, 167 Werz Industrial Drive.

Early registration for new Kindergarten students will be held separately in May.
