The middle school academic bowl season has come to an end with Fayette County teams taking five of the top eight placements for points earned.

The final results of the Griffin RESA Academic Bowl regional competition placed J.C. Booth Middle in first place, Flat Rock Middle in second place, Bennett’s Mill Middle in fifth, Rising Starr Middle placing sixth and Whitewater Middle finishing in eighth place.

Tournaments consist of 20 pairs of toss-up and bonus questions.

Teams earn extra points for correctly-answered bonus questions, helping them gain higher placements in the standings without solely relying on the number of wins and losses.

For example, both J.C. Booth and Flat Rock Middle tied in the region for their number of wins and losses (13-1), but because Booth earned more points overall, the school’s team finished in first place ahead of Flat Rock.

Consequently, Bennett’s Mill Middle had the third highest win/loss record (12-2) in the region, but finished in fifth place based on points.

A total of 24 academic teams from school systems in Butts, Fayette, Henry, Lamar, Newton, Pike, Spalding and Upson counties participated in the competitions.
