Brown moves quickly to test after some Facebook complaints about PTC water odor

Facebook reports of smelly water from several residents in Peachtree City on Dec. 1 led to checks by Fayette County Water System staff who found “no odor and nothing wrong.”

Meantime, the county water system in the past year implemented a procedure of checking water for taste and odor every two hours.

Fayette County Commission Chairman Steve Brown in a Facebook posting just before 10 a.m. on Dec. 2 responded to about a half-dozen mentions of water odors ranging from “musty” to “acidic.”

“The water system immediately dispatched people to take samples at various homes. Nothing was found in the samples,” Brown posted. “We will continue to watch. We take this very seriously.”

County Administrator Steve Rapson on Tuesday said he received the report of smelly water from Brown Monday night and subsequently contacted Fayette County Water System Director Lee Pope.

Pope sent crews to five locations in Peachtree City Monday night, which included the Rockspray, Pinegate, Wilshire, Braelinn and Center Green areas.

“There was no odor and no indication of anything wrong,” Rapson said.

Contacted Tuesday, Pope said crews found no taste or odor issues, adding that samples were taken and brought back to the water plants for testing.

“We didn’t find anything,” Pope said.

Pope said standard practice at the water system for the past year has been to feed carbon into the system and to have water checked at the plant every two hours for taste and odor.

Both Rapson and Pope noted that the county had received no direct phone complaints from residents about smelly water. Pope asked that water customers contact the water system office at 770-461-1146 when problems with water occur.

Smelly water was a major issue in the spring of 2013 that culminated in a number of changes at the water system and the replacement of long-time water system director Tony Parrott.

The Fayette Water System provides all of Peachtree City’s water.
