A game of numbers not only helped students at Sandy Creek High see how math is used in everyday life, but it also benefitted those less fortunate in the community.

Senior Taylour Howell organized a student-led math tournament called “The Numbers Game,” which was hosted by Sandy Creek’s math team after school .

The goal was to show students how math plays a role in daily life, and give them an opportunity to put their knowledge to use. Attendees brought a non-perishable food item for admission; all items were donated to the Real Life Center in Fayetteville.

Students were assigned to teams at either the junior varsity (ninth and 10 th graders) or varsity (11th and 12th graders) level where they competed for prizes and bragging rights, both for their teams and individually.

Students not only solved traditional math problems, but they also put their knowledge to work in physical challenges, which were designed to exercise their problem solving and critical thinking skills rather than physical abilities.

Winners were as follows:

Junior Varsity: Anna Bridgeman (first place, individual); Kalia Blake (second place, individual); Bridgette Churbock (third place, individual); and Emily DeGrange, Lindsey Eichhorn, Alexa Murtha, and Rachel Wood (top team winners).

Varsity: William Allen (first place, individual); Diana Lopez and Nicole Ezeagwu (two-way tie for second place, individual); and Devin Hamill, Nicole Ezeagwu, Shamiah Davis, and Jazmin Perez (top team winners).
