Council votes to do salary study every five years

The idea of having an employee salary study in Peachtree City conducted at the discretion of the city council rather than automatically every five years did not pass muster at the Sept. 4 meeting.

Councilman Eric Imker wanted to leave the matter of the timing of future employee salary and classification studies to the council’s discretion rather than having the study conducted every five years as is currently the practice.

The idea did not fly, and with virtually no discussion the council voted unanimously to keep the studies on an every five-year basis.

City Manager Jim Pennington prior to the vote said he preferred to keep the procedure as is.

The council is expected to hear the results of the now-completed $40,000 salary at a Sept. 16 workshop.

An item on the agenda would have limited Pennington to approving up to $25,000 for expenditures without council approval rather than the current $40,000 limit. No action was taken on the proposal since Councilwoman Kim Learnard and Councilman Terry Ernst said they would not support the measure. No action was taken on the proposal by Imker.

Another item on the Sept. 4 agenda dealt with the amount of reserve funds maintained by the city. Again with essentially no discussion, the council voted unanimously to raise the general fund reserve level from 20 percent to 25 percent.

Also on the Sept. 4 agenda was a proposed amendment to the golf cart ordinance pertaining to registration fees. The idea was to increase the fee from $12 to $15. The item was continued to a later date.
