Question: What do you see in neighborhoods in almost all other small towns that you don’t see in Peachtree City?

Answer: Sidewalks.

Paved golf cart paths may be the bread-and-butter of Peachtree City for getting around town, but sidewalks may be making a comeback.

Three new subdivisions are planning to install sidewalks, but city staff is concerned about the maintenance burden the sidewalks would place on the city.

The issue will be hashed out at Thursday night’s City Council meeting, which starts at 7 p.m. Staff is asking council to weigh in on the matter following a short presentation.

While it might not make sense to have both sidewalks and cart paths in some subdivisions, residents of the Planterra Ridge subdivision have previously said they wish they could have had sidewalks to improve pedestrian safety.

Planterra residents have suffered from cut-through traffic as the main road through has served as a shortcut for vehicles trying to avoid the intersection of Ga. highways 54 and 74. The city ended up installing speed tables as a way to slow some of the traffic down.

Sidewalks would have been nice to have, to provide a safe place for children to travel to and from their friends’ homes, Planterra residents have said.
