Once again, it’s that time of year when we get the long-awaited answer to “Who’s coming to the amphitheater in Fayetteville this year?”
The Southern Ground Amphitheater is excited to announce its lineup for the 2014 Summer Concert Series. This year continues the amphitheater’s long-standing tradition of bringing great entertainers at an affordable price, at the most comfortable outdoor venue in the region.
Kicking off the season on June 7 is one of the premier progressive-rock bands from the 70s, Kansas. They discovered that rare formula of how to create music that appealed to both rock and pop fans of the day. Expect them to perform their rockin’ classics like “Carry on Wayward Son,” and “Point of No Return,” and be prepared to pull out those cell phone “lighters” for “Dust in the Wind.”
On June 28, Southern Ground welcomes the legendary Jefferson Starship. Founding member and main songwriter Paul Kantner leads this legendary San Francisco group on their 40th Anniversary Tour. Expect some psychedelic effects that night as they recreate their monster hits including “Somebody to Love,” “White Rabbit,” “Miracles” and “Count on Me.”
On July 12, Southern Ground hosts an evening of R&B classics with The Temptations Review featuring Dennis Edwards. As one of the driving forces during their psychedelic soul period, Edwards leads this incarnation of the classic Motown group in what is critically recognized as the most authentic version. With a catalog this deep, there won’t be enough time to play them all, but expect to hear such mega-classics as “My Girl,” “Get Ready,” and “Papa Was a Rolling Stone.”
Next on July 26, Southern Ground will feature the late-60s Grammy Award winning band, Gary Puckett & the Union Gap. This American pop band sold more records than any other artist in 1968 and had the ladies swooning to such classics as “Young Girl,” “Lady Willpower,” and their version of the Bee Gees hit, “To Love Somebody.”
Finishing out the series on August 9 is the Charlie Daniels Band. Effortlessly blending country, gospel and southern rock, this outspoken patriot escalated to worldwide fame in the 70s and 80s. You’ve been living under a rock if you don’t remember “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” and other crowd favorites include “In America,” and “Long Haired Country Boy.”
Series tickets are now on sale via the SouthernGroundAmp.com website, and start at $82(+ tax) for general admission lawn seats and $125(+ tax) for reserved seats and include all five shows. Individual show tickets will go on sale April 1.
With spacious seating and grass underfoot, patrons can look forward again to enjoying summer evenings with the most leg room not found at any other venue in the region.
