Sims enjoys her last 'homecoming'

It should come as no surprise that Sasha Sims’ favorite places to play college basketball have been in Georgia.

A former standout for the Fayette County Tigers, the six-foot forward is a senior at Florida’s Stetson University. Averaging nearly 18 points a game this season, she is a leading candidate for Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year.

After two wins last week, the Hatters have compiled a 17-1 record in Georgia during the past four years (13-1 at Mercer University’s Hawkins Arena, 4-0 at Kennesaw State’s Convocation Center). Stetson defeated Mercer 72-60 last Thursday and downed Kennesaw State 98-75 in Saturday’s game to move to 12-5 overall and 4-1 in conference play.

“I won two (Atlantic Sun) championships here,” Sims said after the Mercer game. “Our team tends to shoot well when we come up here and it’s always good to come closer to home so friends and family can see you play.”

With more than a dozen supporters watching, Sims became one of Stetson’s top five career scorers after eclipsing the 1,400 point mark Thursday. Nichelle and Quincy Sims, Sasha’s mom and dad, were there to mark the occasion.

She scored 18 in the Kennesaw game, going 11-12 from the foul line, and was one of five Hatters in double figures.

A sports management major, Sasha has said she wants to pursue a professional basketball career either in the WNBA or overseas.
