A relatively light agenda at the Jan. 8 Fayette County Board of Commissioners meeting begins with two significant items – the election of the board’s chairman and vice-chairman for 2015.

The meeting is the first of the year at which the board will conduct official business. A special called meeting took place last Friday for the swearing-in of new commissioner Pota Coston.

No new business is on the agenda. Old business includes the appointment of a legislative coordinator for 2015 and a resolution “of the Fayette County commissioners’ pledge to citizens and county staff on core values and beliefs,” according to the agenda.

Several items are on the consent agenda, including authorization to sign checks on behalf of the county by the chairman, vice-chairman and county administrator. The proposed plan would require signatures from any two of those office holders for transactions of $5,000 or above, and a signature from any one of them for amounts of $4,999.99 or less.

Approval of the consent agenda will also give those three positions the authority to execute contracts, resolutions, agreements and other documents approved by and on behalf of the board.

A request to accept a $1,251 grant for a paging system at the Fayette County Library is on the consent agenda, with $1,344 in matching funds from the library’s operations budget for supplemental upgrades to the paging system.

Also up for approval is a request from the clerk of Superior Court to amend and expand the scope of the court’s technology fund, as well as the 2015 meeting schedule of the Water Committee.

Brooke Fletcher, a 2010 Starr’s Mill High School graduate and recent winner of the 2015 Miss Georgia USA pageant, will be recognized by the board at the meeting.

Johanna Nelson, a student at J.C. Booth Middle School, will also be recognized as the winner of the 2014 Water Essay Contest.

The board meets at 7 p.m. in its regular meeting room at the county’s administrative offices in downtown Fayetteville.
