UPDATED 12:01 a.m. Wed. Jan. 7, 2014 — A vehicle turned into the path of an oncoming motorcyclist Tuesday afternoon in Peachtree City, causing fatal injuries to the motorcyclist, Robert McElwaine, 28, of Tyrone, Peachtree City police said.

The driver of the vehicle, 75-year-old Peachtree City resident Donna Johnson was charged Wednesday with second degree vehicular homicide and making an improper turn. According to statute, second degree vehicular homicide is a misdemeanor because the death was unintentional, said Peachtree City Police Department spokeswoman Odilia Bergh.

“The Police Department received notice that Mr. Robert McElwaine died as a result of the injuries he suffered in the motor vehicle collision [Tuesday] afternoon,” police reported in a late Tuesday night update. McElwaine had been transported by rescue air helicopter to the Atlanta Medical Center where he underwent surgery before succumbing to his injuries, according to police reports.

The collision happened about 2:15 p.m. at the intersection of Ga. Highway 74 North and Lexington Pass, across from the junction with Old Senoia Road, police said.

Johnson was driving south on Hwy. 74 and made a left turn onto Lexington Pass, resulting in a collision with the northbound motorcycle driver, police said.

The wreck resulted in Hwy. 74 being closed down for arrival of the helicopter and the resulting collision reconstruction investigation by the department’s community response team, police said.
