The Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) has announced that Mike Smith, Assistant Principal at Sara Harp Minter Elementary School, has been voted president-elect of the more than 69,000 member professional organization, the largest such group in Georgia. His one year term of office as the organization’s president-elect began in June.

A longtime member of PAGE, having first joined in 1991, Smith has served the organization in a number of capacities including building and system contact as well as chapter officer. More recently he has served two terms on the PAGE Board of Directors representing District Six, a twelve county area which includes Fayette County.

Smith’s election to the leadership position took place in late June at the PAGE Summer Conference. As a part of his duties this year, in his role as president-elect, Smith will preside over the work of the organization’s legislative committee responsible for drafting PAGE’s legislative priorities for the 2008 session of the General Assembly.

This fall Smith will join with other PAGE leaders on a trip to Washington, D.C. to discuss with members of Congress and federal officials reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind legislation, federal funding for special education and the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
