We need growth but not through annexing Coweta

Last week Dar Thompson presented an opinion piece proposing the annexation of 1,600 acres of Coweta County parcels in order to create “a new city center and high-tech corridor.”

Left out of this proposal is the fact that such a plan would require a very substantial investment in infrastructure and a lengthy litigation process, as I am sure the aforementioned land belongs to multiple owners.

The growth Mr. Thompson envisions comes with a very substantial capital investment which would require many years before Peachtree City would realize any return on that capital.

I agree that Peachtree City must generate revenue sources, but an alternative solution would be preferable. The city needs to continue to develop the industrial park acreage and if necessary annex land to make more land available for that purpose.

In order to grow the industrial sector, we need a work force with a variety of skills. A local vocational school could train and supply the workers necessary for the increase in jobs.

Let’s have a discussion about the manner in which Peachtree City should increase future revenue while keeping the same “footprint” the original developers had in mind. Most of the city’s residents like it the way it is and do not want to become like the congested cities on Atlanta’s north side.
