Robert Elton Johnson, Jr.

Dr. Robert Elton Johnson, Jr. passed peacefully into the arms of his Lord at 9:06 p.m. on Monday evening, December 4th, 2017. Born November 18, 1933, he ran a magnificent race until the distinguished age of 84.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Joy Le Anne Emery Johnson, and his four sons, Elton III, David, Scott and Jonathan, 13 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Dr. Johnson pastored multiple Southern Baptist churches in Mississippi, Missouri, South Carolina, Kentucky and Georgia in his fruitful gospel ministry since 1955, and served as a third generation missionary to Brazil where he also pastored in Sao Paulo. He was tremendously effective as he preached with remarkable insight and a passion to lead people to faith in Christ, and to develop their gifts for his service. American-born and raised in Brazil, he ministered with mastery and fluency in both English and Portuguese. Since his retirement from vocational ministry, he was compelled by his devotion to serve his Lord, and continued to travel to Brazil as an Evangelist, and enjoyed this fruitful chapter, seeing over 10,000 people come to Christ in this decade of his “retirement.”

A Celebration of Life was open to the public at Mowell Funeral Home at 200 Robinson Road in Peachtree City, Ga. on Saturday, December 9, 2017. Visitation was offered from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the service from 1 – 2 p.m. with a private family graveside service that followed.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Dr. Johnson’s Ministry for the purpose of publishing his book, “Transforming Encounters,” a collection of sermons from the series he so effectively preached in Brazil in recent years, including a brief history of his legacy of ministry and missions. It was Dr. Johnson’s painstaking last labor of love as he was losing his sight and mobility, and it was his dying prayer that it would serve as a tool for young Brazilian Pastors. Those who wish to contribute may send donations payable to North South Ministries, to the attn. of Jonathan Johnson, 133 Ragsdale Road, Sharpsburg, Ga., 30277.
