Compared to other areas around Georgia, Fayette County dodged a bullet from the Georgia weekend storms, though storms moving through the area did cause a tree to fall on one home, lightning sparked a residential fire with no injuries and gusty winds blew down several power lines and trees across the county.

Fayette County Emergency Management Director Mike Singleton said the house fire occurred on North Fayette Drive off Ga. Highway 314 when lightning struck a gas line. There were no injuries but the home is not livable and Red Cross was called to the scene, he said.

Singleton said a tree fell on a house in the Kingswood subdivision off Ga. Highway 92 South.

“There were other trees and power lines down around the county, but nothing major,” Singleton said.

In Peachtree City, fire department spokesman Ron Mundy said there were several trees and power lines down with quickly-draining water that accumulated temporarily in some areas.

“We were fortunate,” Mundy said of the storm that wreaked havoc in parts of Georgia.
