Frances Brooks Cown, 96, of Fayetteville, passed away March 26, 2013.

She was born and raised in Fairburn, Ga. and settled in College Park after she married. Frances retired, then moved to Fayetteville in 1984 where she spent the rest of her life. She graduated from Campbell County High then attended West Georgia College in Carrollton. She earned a business degree from Draughons Business College in Atlanta. Frances worked as a secretary at Federated Hardware Mutual Insurance Company and at Southeastern Stages before passing the Civil Service Exam and working at Fort McPherson. She retired from the Fulton County Board of Education, having been the school secretary for Eastern Elementary in Red Oak and Josephine Wells Elementary in Hapeville. For many years, she was a member of Newton Estates United Methodist Church (while a member, the name changed to Christ United Methodist Church) in College Park, then to Fayetteville First United Methodist Church where she had been active in the Hope Circle, Parrish Sunday School class and the Titus II senior citizens group. Frances was a wonderful and creative cook. She also loved to garden and to entertain friends and family, both of whom she had many. Her favorite time of year was the Christmas Season when she would transform her home into a wonderland of decorations, winning community awards for several years.

She is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 55 years, John Mark Cown; her parents, William Clark and Millie Boyd Brooks and her two sisters, Jimmie Brooks and Georgia Olvey. She is survived by her daughters, Pam (Ray) Little of Pensacola, Fla. and Roselyn (Ken) Roberts of Fayetteville, Ga.; granddaughters, Amy (Bryan) Johnson of Senoia, Alicia (Jeremy) Register of Augusta, Ga., Christina (Jacob) Smith of Cantonment, Fla.; and great-granddaughter, Kayla Smith of Cantonment, Fla.

Her family wants to thank the staff of Azalea Estates Retirement Community in Fayetteville for their wonderful support and care for the past 8 years. Frances will be forever loved and remembered in the hearts of many.

A funeral service was held Friday, March 29, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Fayetteville First United Methodist Church. Reverend Mark Westmoreland officiated. The burial followed at Holly Hills Cemetery, Fairburn. The family received friends Thursday, March 28, 2013 from 4 until 6 p.m. at the Chapel of Mowell Funeral Home, Fayetteville.
